HOW TO REDUCE SALON TURNOVER

STOP SALON TURNOVER BEFORE IT STARTS: PROVEN HIRING, ONBOARDING, & MANAGEMENT TIPS

Salon turnover is a notorious challenge for small salon and beauty business owners, but not all businesses face the same struggle. High turnover rates often result from issues in three key areas: hiring, onboarding, and management.

In this article, we'll explore the root causes of salon turnover and I'll share proven, actionable steps to retain your team and build a stronger business. These foundational tips may seem simple at first glance, but these simple guidelines created one of the strongest salon teams in an Atlanta, and if they can work there, they can certainty work for you.

Hiring: Finding the Right Fit

Hiring the wrong people is one of the main contributors to turnover. Often, salon owners make these common mistakes:

1. Hiring someone who doesn’t align with the salon’s culture.

2. Selecting candidates who lack the necessary personality or skill set for the role.

How to Solve It:

Be specific about the role. Create a summary of each role and clearly define the day-to-day tasks and goals for the position. How do you measure success in this role? What qualities or prerequisites do they need? Do they need to be detail-oriented or thrive in a fast-paced environment?

Do a shadow day. Let potential hires spend a day in your salon to observe their interaction with your team and clients. This helps you assess if they’re a cultural fit while giving them a chance to experience the actual working environment.

Onboarding: Setting Clear Expectations

A poor onboarding process can lead to confusion and unmet expectations
, which drives turnover and internal conflict when some team members are perceived as "not pulling their weight". Common onboarding mistakes include:

1. Failing to clearly outline day-to-day tasks and expectations.

2. Overlooking professional expectations like attitude, dress code, and communication.

How to Solve It:

Create a comprehensive onboarding process. Outline clear professional and role-specific expectations, and review these with each new hire. Everyone should be on the same page regarding their responsibilities and the business’s policies.

You'll know that they know. Ensuring everyone is onboarded in the same fashion will also ensure there are absolutely NO misunderstandings about what is expected from them personally and professionally.

Management: Building Strong Relationships

Management plays a critical role in retention. Turnover often happens when managers:

1. Don’t develop meaningful relationships with employees. A positive, genuine relationship is required to gain the respect and influence required to initiate tough conversations or communicate effectively with a team.

2. Fail to hold team members to consistent standards or don’t recognize workload gaps.

How to Solve It:

Take a personal interest in your team. Set time aside to build genuine relationships with every team member. Strong relationships build trust and allow managers to have influence and healthy conversational leverage when it counts.

Support your team consistently. Offer hands-on help and ensure every employee is held to the same standards. When employees are held to different standards it creates unhealthy bias, unintentional discrimination, and a lack of safety in the workplace.

Summary

While salon turnover can be influenced by various factors, solving issues in hiring, onboarding, and management will lay the groundwork for a loyal and engaged team who feels valued by leadership.

By building a strong foundation from the start, you'll reduce turnover, improve salon morale, and create a more positive work environment that your team will feel safe to thrive in.

At the end of the day, all salons are unique, and if you need support navigating a challenging team or circumstance, I'd be happy to help you outline strategies unique to your business circumstance.
